Seal the Deal With These Tips on How to Oil Your 4c Natural Hair
Deep down we all want to know if we’re doing this natural hair care journey right. Something as simple as oiling your 4c hair comes with a ton of unknowns like what oil type, frequency, and application method is best.
There is no “right” way to nourish your crown. Your hair journey, like a life path, is supposed to look different than the next person!
When it comes to oiling your scalp, think of it as an “essential worker” inside your hair care regimen. No matter what routine falls off or new product is added, consider this a rock steady practice that when done properly, will continue to moisturize and promote a healthy scalp which in turn promotes real (not miraculous empty promises) hair growth.
Here’s everything you need to know!
When oiling my natural hair, can I use the same oil for my scalp as I do for the rest of my hair?
Short Answer: No.
Long answer: Natural hair oils usually fall into two categories, Moisturizing Oils for scalp & Sealant oils for strands.
Moisturizing oils pierce your hair shaft and scalp and help to moisturize your hair. They are best used in your leave ins, hot oil treatments, or to add to your deep conditioner.
Best Moisturizing Oils for 4c hair:
- Avocado Oil
- Olive Oil
- Argan Oil
- Coconut Oil (pure and unrefined) This oil doesn’t work for everyone, it can also be used to help thicken your conditioner for a deeper scalp treatment.
Sealing oils help to keep all that water and moisturizing oil locked in. Remember to use these after moisturizing your hair with a water based product because after you apply these oils there is no water in and no water out. Many creams and butters will contain these oils, or you can try sealing with just oils alone.
Best Sealing Oils for 4c Hair:
- Jojoba oil
- Shea butter
- Jamaican Castor Oil (best to be mixed with another oil because it is so thick)
Short Answer: Every Other Day.
Long Answer: Every other day/every 2-3 days is usually a good rule of thumb for 4C textured beauties who tend to have super low porosity. However, even within the 4C curl type porosity often depends on how thick or thin your strands are. Thinner strands tend to be higher in porosity, meaning they absorb more product/moisture/water than someone with thicker hair.
The easiest way to tell if you need to oil your scalp more often? Notice how long your curls stay hydrated, particularly the scalp area after your wash day routine.
How many sections do I need to divide my hair into to properly oil?
Short answer: At least 4 sections.
Long answer: 4 sections is usually enough for short to medium length hair. Once divided, part each section with your comb about 3 times and apply oil along the line of the scalp using your finger tips or a dropper.
For the length of the hair, place several drops into the palms of your hands and use the prayer method to apply it down the shaft of the hair, making sure to include the ends. Again, this step comes after applying your water-based moisturizer.
But don’t stop there! The last and most important step is to massage the oil into your scalp with your fingertips. Not only does it feel good, it also sends a message to the hair follicles to “wake it up!” by promoting blood flow and much needed circulation for growth
Short answer: Yes! Feel free to do a hot oil treatment if your hair is dry/damaged, frizzy, or brittle.
Long answer: Hot oil treatments are great monthly treats for overly dry hair, heat damaged hair, and even nice to do after a long term protective style.
We recommend applying your indirectly heated oils (best if you place them over hot water) after you have clarified and shampooed the hair. That way the oils can beautifully attach to the hair follicles instead of the buildup that is already there.
Apply your treatment when the hair is still damp, not completely dry, as this will lock in the moisture of the water.
