If wash day at your house feels like a negotiation, you're not alone. Kids' curls — especially coily and 4C textures — need a different rhythm than adult hair: gentler cleansing, much more moisture, and a lot more patience. After 20+ years behind the chair, here is the exact routine I teach parents, step by step.

Before the water: five minutes that change everything

Section the hair into four to six loose twists or puffs before it ever gets wet. Working in sections keeps delicate strands from tangling into each other, makes every later step faster, and helps a wiggly little one feel the progress (“two sections done, two to go!”).

Stylist's tip: never dry-detangle 4C hair. Wait for slip — that comes in step three.

Step 1 — Cleanse gently, never strip

Coily hair is naturally drier because scalp oils take longer to travel down the curl. That means harsh, squeaky-clean shampoos are the enemy. Use a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo, focus the lather on the scalp — not the lengths — and let the rinse water carry the cleanser through the ends. Once a week is plenty for most kids; over-washing is one of the most common causes of dryness I see.

Step 2 — Condition like you mean it

This is the step that makes or breaks wash day. Apply conditioner generously from roots to ends, one section at a time, and let it sit for two to three minutes — five to seven if the hair has been in a long protective style. You're looking for the hair to feel soft and “slippery” before you move on.

Step 3 — Detangle with slip, from ends to roots

With conditioner (or a detangling milk) still in the hair, detangle each section with fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb — always starting at the ends and working up toward the roots. Going top-down pushes small knots into bigger ones, and that's where the “ouch” comes from. A dedicated detangler makes this dramatically gentler on tender heads.

Step 4 — Moisturize while damp

Damp hair drinks in moisture; dry hair mostly wears it. While each section is still damp, layer in a leave-in or moisturizing cream, smoothing it through with praying hands. This is the step that keeps curls soft and defined until the next wash day, and it's the one most routines skip.

Step 5 — Seal it in

Finish each section with a light oil to seal the moisture you just added — a few drops smoothed over the lengths and a gentle scalp massage. Sealing is the difference between hair that feels moisturized tonight and hair that still feels moisturized on Thursday.

Between wash days

• Refresh with a spritz of water plus a little leave-in — don't restart the whole routine.
• Sleep on satin: a bonnet or pillowcase protects all that work from cotton friction.
• Low-manipulation styles (loose twists, puffs) protect the ends, where breakage starts.
